A historical timeline of the M.S. Royal Star

San Giorgio
(Adriatica: 1956-76)

The San Giorgio, built for Adriatica Line services, entered service in 1956, and at 4755 gross tons carried a total of 274 passengers. Sailing in the Mediterranean, she offered cruises between Trieste and Genoa.

City of Andros
(Princess Cruises charter: 1976-84)

San Giorgio was sold in 1976, and was converted into the cruise ship City of Andros. Still based in the Mediterranean she offered mini - cruises from Athens, Greece.

Ocean Islander
(Ocean Cruise Line: 1984-90)

City of Andros was sold in 1984 to Ocean Cruise Lines. She was rebuilt and renamed Ocean Islander. Part of a two ship fleet, along with the Ocean Princess, she sailed from Venice in summer, and cruised the Caribbean during the winter months.

M.S. Royal Star
(African Safari Club: 1990- present day)

In 1990, the Ocean Islander was sold to the Swiss-owned African Safari Club. Operating under Starline cruises she was renamed M.S. Royal Star and has since been operating a year round programme of cruises to the paradise islands of the Indian Ocean. In 1992 she was extensively refurbished, including changes to cabin layouts, and now carries a maximum of just 200 passengers, compared to 276 when she first entered service.
