Mozambique Destination Guide

Maputo

Maputo (formerly Lourenco Marques) is located near the very southern tip of the country. Renowned for its colonial Portuguese architecture, it has wide avenues, colourful markets, cafés, bars and restaurants. Maputo's most important landmark is its old Portuguese fortress which was built in 1787. Other places of interest are the impressive Central Railway Station (designed by Eiffel who gave us the famous tower), and the Botanical Gardens.
