Vasco da Gama Hotel

We are pleased to announce that the Vasco da Gama will feature a new concept in our accommodation. The hotel caters particularly for those guests who would be travelling as a couple, perhaps two friends travelling together, or part of a group booking, but who would like the privacy of having their own bedroom, bathroom and living space on holiday. Whilst the hotel has no direct beach access, a short walk through the lush, tropical grounds and down a steep flight of steps takes you to the palm-fringed, white-sand Shanzu Beach. Before reaching the beach, the 'Pavillion d'Amour', which is built on a promontory overlooking the sea, will tempt you to linger for a while and enjoy the fabulous views of the Indian Ocean.

Your Accommodation

The 58 bedrooms are housed over three storeys and all have views of either the pool or Indian Ocean although views of the sea can be interrupted by the lush foliage. All rooms have air-conditioning and are simply furnished. Each of the new accommodation units has its own entry door which leads to a communal lobby area with shared wardrobe. From here, two open archways each lead to a separate bedroom which has a large single bed, a private shower and wc and a large balcony or terrace. Single rooms in the hotel have a bedroom with a single bed, a private shower and wc and a large balcony or terrace. Suites are also available and benefit from a bedroom with twin beds, a separate lounge area with fridge, a private shower and wc and a large balcony or terrace.

Wining and Dining

A hot and cold breakfast is served buffet style. Lunch and dinner are part buffet and part waiter service from a table d'hote menu. Refreshing drinks are available throughout the day and evening from the hotel's two bars, one of which has wonderful views of the Indian Ocean. For that special occasion, you can dine at the Seaview Terrace à la carte restaurant.

Facilities and Entertainment

In front of the hotel are spacious lawns with shade-giving palms where you can relax on a sun bed. Or you can enjoy a dip in the hotel's swimming pool which is surrounded by a sun terrace. Please note that a small charge is made for sun beds (approximately £1 per person per day) and pool towels are not provided. Guests staying at the hotel may also use the facilities at the adjacent Flamingo Beach and Dolphin Hotels which are just a few minutes walk away from the hotel grounds. For a small supplement, you can reserve your own sunbeds (two) and parasol on the beach, in front of the Flamingo Beach and Dolphin Hotels. There are also massage facilities (payable locally), a lounge, a small shop and a cafeteria where drinks and snacks can be purchased throughout the day until early evening. There is occasional entertainment at night and guests are also invited to use the facilities and enjoy the popular entertainment at our Shanzu Holiday Resort, to which a complimentary shuttle bus service operates in the evening.

Excursions

A programme of exciting optional daytime and evening excursions is available during your stay at the Vasco da Gama Hotel. Spend the day at sea staying watchful for dolphins and turtles. A half day tour visits the old port of Mombasa where trade ships once sailed between Arabia, Persia and India. Enjoy an evening discovering the stunning sunsets of Mtwapa Creek and the tribal dances of the Masai warriors. Prices of excursions start from just £10 per person and are only bookable locally. Further details can be found in our General Information Booklet which will be sent with your Confirmation Invoice. Deep sea fishing trips can also be arranged locally.

Watersports

If watersports are your passion or you would like to give them a try, there's dinghy sailing, windsurfing, snorkelling and more, available at the Watersports Centre, adjacent to the Paradise Beach Hotel which is approximately a 20 minute stroll away along glorious Shanzu Beach.

Diving Holidays

Kenya offers some of the best diving in the world with a coral reef that extends almost the entire length of the coast with a wide variety of marine flora and fauna. Diving is available offering excellent facilities for both the beginner and more experienced diver at Mtwapa Marina. From October to mid April, PADI courses are available, as well as CMAS beginner courses. These are only bookable locally.
