Preparing for your Holiday
Page 3 of 4WHAT TO TAKE
Dress in Kenya is generally casual, with light, loosefitting cotton or natural fibre clothing recommended for everyday wear. On the beach swimwear, shorts and T-shirts are appropriate and whilst on safari trousers, sombre coloured cotton shirts and comfortable enclosed walking shoes are recommended. The sun in Kenya is very strong so it is also advisable to take sun hats, sunglasses and long sleeved shirts. You may like to include a set of smarter clothes for that special night out, and we also recommend that you take a sweater or light jacket for the evenings and for early morning game drives.
OTHER ESSENTIALS
We recommend that you include the following items in your luggage: hairdryer, beach towels (for hotel stays), a first aid kit including plasters, antiseptic cream and insect repellent, diarrhoea pills, high factor suntan lotion and a pocket torch. If you are going on safari, be sure to take a hat, binoculars and
camera. Take plenty of film and batteries as they are expensive in Kenya and at ports of call. If you take a video camera, it must be declared to customs on entry into Kenya, and on exit.
You may find that a small supply of pens and paper is handy, as many visitors to Kenya like to give these as presents to the local children. The gesture is always appreciated but remember, the weight of these items will be included within your luggage allowance.
LUGGAGE ALLOWANCE
If you are carrying more than the permitted weight in either your hold or your hand luggage, you will be charged for the excess up to the rate of £8.00 per kilo.
On Monarch Airlines the hold luggage allowance is 30kg in Economy Class and 40kg for Premium Class plus 5kg of hand luggage.
Luggage in excess of the allowance is at the airline’s discretion and excess charges will apply for all luggage which is over the permitted weight. It is important that you are aware of this before you leave the UK as you may wish to purchase souvenirs which will add extra weight for your return flight.
If your luggage is within these limits but exceeds the allowance for your connecting flight within the UK or to or from Europe, we will reimburse the excess charge up to the above allowances.
If you are travelling to your departure airport using a connecting flight, it will be necessary to retrieve your luggage and check it in again for your flight to Mombasa.
For health and safety reasons no single piece of hold luggage weighing over 32kg will be accepted.
If your hand luggage is over the permitted limit, in the interest of safety, you will be asked to place it in the hold with your “checked” luggage. Hand luggage includes items you are carrying such as cameras, reading material, coats etc. Hand luggage must be small enough to fit into the overhead locker 45x35x16cm or underneath the seat in front of you.
Please note that infants under two years of age do not have a luggage allowance.
HAND LUGGAGE
Passengers are reminded that as a result of heightened security restrictions at all UK airports, certain items may not be carried on the aircraft as hand luggage. For the latest information, please check www.baa.com/security or telephone a member of our Reservations Team who will be happy to provide you with the latest advice.
Always keep your valuables (including cameras and mobile phones), passport and travel documents in your hand luggage. In the rare event that your suitcases go astray, it is also advisable to include medication in your hand luggage. Should you need to carry syringes as part of your prescribed medication, you must produce a doctor’s note at check-in/security. Do not place valuables in your “checked” luggage as it is rare for insurance companies to provide cover for these items and African Safari Club will not consider such claims.
PACKING AND LABELLING
For security reasons it is essential that you use your own cases and pack them yourself. Include a label inside each case with your name, home address and holiday destination. Your cases should then be securely locked and the keys kept on your person or in your handbag. For safety reasons we recommend that luggage labels on your outbound journey show just your name, destination and hotel address but not your home address.
If you have not booked our Deluxe Package, the night before your return journey you may be asked to leave your hold luggage in reception where it will be looked after by security staff before taking it to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
